Aer Lingus/Connections Times/Customs & Immigration

Hello,

For my upcoming trip, I am looking at flying Aer Lingus. On my way, the route be would Washington, DC to Spain (change planes in Dublin), and then flying home from London, with plane changes in Dublin and Boston, to Richmond, VA. I'm wondering if the tickets I'm finding offer reasonable transfer times (I know, on a single ticket, it is the airline's responsibility to book me on the next available flight, but those are often 12 hours later). On the way over, I will be going carry-on only, but I'll be checking stuff on the way home.

I am trying to make sure I understand all the steps. As I understand it, on the way over I'd:

--land in Dublin at 5:25 am; connect to Barcelona --transfer time: 1 hr and 5 min.

Given the short connecting and time the fact that I would not be leaving the secure area, am I right to assume
that immigration & customs would wait for Barcelona? Or would I go through immigration at least in Dublin? And, if so, is 65 minutes reasonable?

On the way home, I'd fly:
--London to Dublin, 5 hour layover (Is this where I'd clear customs, because I'm leaving from Ireland? Or would I have to wait until I get to Boston because the flight originated in the UK?)
--Land in Boston, 2 hr and 40 minute layover, connect to Richmond.

I apologize for the overly long post, but I'm finding this confusing. My main concerns are with the 65 min layover in Dublin on the way, and having enough time to clear customs on the way back. Last summer, I flew Icelandair/Jet Blue on my way home, and the 1 hr and 45 min in Boston wasn't long enough for customs/retrieving/rechecking luggage. I (and a lot of other people on the flight) ended up missing my connection and had to stay overnight.

Thanks!
Caroline

The layover times seem reasonable to me. I'd have more concerns about the airline.

I flew Aer Lingus to Dublin last summer (from Boston). Awful flights. Numerous entertainment systems were not operable, not a lot of legroom, and the only way to operate stuff like the light or volume was under the shared armrest with your neighbor.
Also be aware that in Boston you do not get to go to your domestic/international flight without having to go through the TSA security screening again.

We just flew Aer Lingus Boston to Amsterdam RT and had a good experience. On the way home we cleared customs in Ireland and landed in Boston as domestic passengers. I can't speak to connecting in Boston since it was our final destination. We checked bags coming home (beer!) and everything turned out fine. The Dublin airport has a very efficient system. On the way there, there was a quick passport control in Dublin and full customs in Amsterdam.

Regarding the comfort of the flights, they were fine. We are budget travelers, though, and not looking for anything fancy. We had many good movie options, a free checked bag, meals, and snacks, and that felt luxurious to us compared to domestic flights! There was no beverage service on the Dublin-Schipol leg.

Do note that the terminal in BOS that EI use will be changing to Terminal C on 2 May if that affects your ease of connection.

One advantage to flying back to the US via Dublin is that you'll get US customs and immigration out of the way in Dublin, since Dublin has US Preclearance. So when you land in Boston, it will be like arriving on a domestic flight. The only catch is that you'll have to go through security again.

We just returned from the RS Sicily Tour, flying Aer Lingus from Boston to Rome via Dublin, then using Alitalia to fly from Rome to Sicly and back to Rome. The Aer Lingus experience was good. On the way to Italy, we had a layover in the international area of the Dublin airport, and had no trouble making a connection to the Dublin-Rome leg. Note that Aer Lingus charged for refreshments on the Dublin-Rome flight. Going home, it was nice to clear US customs/immigration ins Dublin instead of doing it in Boston. The customs setup in Dublin was a bit slow, but we still made the flight home.
