Aer Lingus baggage questions

We are traveling Aer Lingus to Italy in October. We would like to pack lightly and use only a carry on and a backpack. While on their website I see that you can take one piece of luggage as well as one personal item. The personal item dimensions say the maximum size is 10"x13"x8". Has anyone traveled by Aer Lingus before? I was hoping to uses a carry on and a backpack, but my backpack is bigger than the dimensions mentioned above. Do you think it will be ok to use the bigger backpack as my personal item? Anyone have any problems doing that? Thanks.

If the backpack is soft-sided, not packed full, and will squeeze down to the required dimensions and fit under the seat in front of you, then I would not expect a problem.

We flew on Aer Lingus last year. My backpack, which I’ve taken everywhere, barely fit under the seat in front of me. So there’s not much space, and it took away a bit of my (stingy) legroom, but it worked out OK. I’d say the under-seat space is a bit smaller than what you might be used to. As Laura said, just don’t pack to the gills, and you’ll be fine.
Have a wonderful trip!

It is best to follow the rules. They are there for a reason. Bags get more scrutiny on full flights while you are boarding. There is always a possibility that the people boarding before you will have taken up the overhead bin space as the most inconsiderate kind not only put bags up there but also their coats, leaving you know place to put your bag. And if it does not fit under the seat what will you do?
