Aer Lingus and Ryanair baggage limits

We do the one-bag light-packing thing, but I still can't imagine how we can stick to the 10 kg limit (6kg for Aer Lingus!). Any ideas? Or should we just assume we'll have to check a bag? We're only jumping from Dublin to Birmingham, but it looks like this short flight might be expensive with all the extra fees. Help me decide what to do, please.

What's so horrible about a checking a bag on a short, one-leg flight? I check all the time and have never had a problem. Rather than pay overweight fees I'd just plan on checking.

I agree with Nancy. There are worse things in life than having to check a bag. I check my bag ALL the time. Never had a problem in 40 + years of traveling!

10 kg is 22 pounds.....how heavy is your bag empty? Checking a bag on a a short flight between two smaller airports isn't as bad as say waiting for luggage at Heathrow. (Think Terminal 5)

However, many airlines in Europe charge for checked luggage. So you need to factor that cost into the price of your ticket.

They do charge to check bags and Ryanair charges an additional check-in fee because then you can't check in online (another helpline topic says only EU passports are eligible for online check in anyway). So we're looking at E12 for each bag on Aer Lingus and E10 for each on Ryanair. Since there are three of us traveling, maybe we can combine our heavier stuff (books and shoes) and only check one. With the dollar dropping daily, we do have to watch our expenses.

You must hold an EU passport for online check-in with Ryanair. And you can have the desk check-in fee refunded to you because you aren't eligible for online check-in. So all you would be paying is the checked bag fee in the end. Also, if you tell them during the ticket-buying process that you plan to check a bag (Ryanair), the fee is less than if you wait till you get to the airport to tell them.
