Advice on Transportation from Rothenburg, Germany to Murren, Switerzland

Hey!

I am planning a trip to Germany, Switzerland, Austria with my husband and am getting stuck on the best way to get from Rothenburg, Germany to Murren, Switzerland. We will have a rental car for the first leg of the trip in Germany (Cologne, Cochem, Rothenburg). Thoughts on driving versus taking train or bus?

From Murren, we will travel to Munich, Hallstatt, and the Vienna.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I use the Deutsche Bahn site to check schedules. I get 9 hours and 7 train changes.

You are going from one dead-end out-of-the-way location to another. You might look at driving to Loerrach, Germany and dropping the car (no international drop charge) and proceeding by train from there. Loerrach is just outside of Basel. So you take a train to Basel, then to Interlaken Ost, then to Lauterbrunnen, then a short lift to Gruetschalp, then train to Muerren. That's 3 1/2 hours.

If you drive all the way, you will need to purchase a Swiss vignette, and the car will sit in a paid parking spot in Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg while you are in Muerren.

You don't say where you are going afterward.

Sam,

Thank you for that helpful information! Yes, I started researching that and realized how out of the way they both were. Okay, I think driving to Loerrach, Germany would be a good option. It currently looks like it is a 4 hr drive. Would we just drop off the car and taxi to the train station?

Thanks,

Depends on what rental you will have. Sixt is right next to the Loerrach Schwartzwaldstrasse S-Bahn station. Europecar is half way between there and Loerrach Hbf. Hertz is closest to a different rail line near Haltingen station. All the trains go into Basel, but Haltingen stops at Basel Bad station and you take a short S-Bahn transfer to Basel SBB to continue to Interlaken.
