I have been trying to figure out if I should rent a car or go with the buy back lease. Lots to like about the buy back lease. However, I have received the fine print contracts from 2 companies and both list the people that are considered additional drivers. Neither of them list a friend as an appropriate additional driver- it is spouse, mother, father or domestic partner. I am only going with my friend. I inquired via e-mail with one of the companies wrote back and said that as long as I was in the car with the person they were covered. The other (that I prefer because the car has and 110 HP instead of 90) would not send me anything in writing but did explain to me the issue between the insurance and how a person "qualifies" for the buy back program. Anyway, does anyone have any experience with this and suggestions. Both companies say we are both covered but the contract is not written that way.
We encountered exactly the same issue with Renault Eurodrive. We travel with another couple and the 2 husbands share the driving. Renault convinced me that all their insurances were in effect as long as the lessee was in the vehicle. So both of us drove.
Of course we never had an accident or problem so their assurances were never tested, but I felt like I could trust them.
We've used Renault's program 4 times and we really like it.
Tom, thanks for your reply. I too am looking at Renault and am going to go ahead with them. Based on everything I can find there isn't a big risk in my case. Fingers crossed.
Terri, one reassuring thought for me was that it is totally in Renault's interest to fully insure & protect the car, because they intend to resell it.
The way I understand it, the whole reason for their lease/buyback program is so that they can resell an almost-new car as a used car, which in France results in a much lower tax.
