We have an early morning flight out of Milan. I understand the hotels by the airport (?are there any?) don't have airport transportation, as we do here in the states. I am wondering if we would be better off staying at some place near the main train station in Milan. Does anyone have any suggestion for acceptable (hopefully inexpensive) places to stay? Has anyone had experience with the "Express Train" from the main station in Milan to MXP?

there are a few hotels right outside of the train station. you walk out and then 1 block on your left, there are at least 3. the first one is expensive, but the other 2 are not bad. the shuttle bus to the airport is just outside of the train station. you're better off stay around the main train station for sure.

The express train leaves from the Cadorna station not Centrale, the main station. If you are staying near Centrale the bus is the best option. There are 2 terminals at MXP and it is important to know which one your flight leaves from.

We looked on Orbitz.com for hotels close to the station in Milan. Since Milan is a business center a lot of the hotels are geared to business travelers and run great specials in the summer and other traditionally high seasons when no one has business meetings. We stay in a great hotel about two blocks from the station for about 100 Euros a night.
