I am ambulatory, but my lung disease makes climbing stairs and slopes very slow and difficult. I've been to Edinburgh before I was so challenged, so I know the city is often UP. We are staying in Grassmarket and have tickets for the castle tour. I see that the walk would be quite steep. Would you recommend a bus? taxi? or is there an easier path? I know there is an accessible access vehicle offered IN the castle, but I need to get there. Thank you.
Aside from walking, your only option will be either a taxi or Uber.
You may want to reconsider your lodging choice to avoid stairs and inclines. Perhaps a hotel in New Town would be more comfortable.
Ksizer, I would suggest reviewing the accessibility page on the Edinburgh Castle website located here: https://www.edinburghcastle.scot/plan-your-visit/access-guide/
You can get assistance with getting to the top of the hill but you need to ask in advance and it gives you specific instructions. Look through it and see if any of that helps.
I would say that the answer to this concern would involve some thinking about what else
you want to see that would be walkable for you.
Staying in Grassmarket is an easier walk to the castle than if you stayed down in New
Town imo. If you remained in your current accommodation, perhaps a pedicab that just takes
you from, say, Bank Street to the castle itself, could work.
I can't recall, but I think there are steps and different floors in the castle as well, so you
would want to be careful with that.
The problem with staying close to the castle is that going anyplace else requires a
downhill trek and then an uphill trek later in the day, when you may be more tired.
Or a lot of taxis.
I'm not aware of an easier path than going up from the intersection of Bank Street and
Castlehill to the castle.
