AA just announced it will start charging $50 for a second checked bags on international flights. First Class, Business Class, Elite FF and Military are exempt.
Frank - I saw the same thing for Delta a few months back. They (Delta) are hoping the new baggage fee will net them an additional 2 mil per year.
It will...lots of heavy packers out there. They still think they have to take everything and can't buy anything away from home. Or heaven forbid, do laundry.
Yet again another reason to pack light! Unfortunately this will lead even more people to try to carry on as much crammed-full luggage as possible.
I’m sure they’re already modeling the attractive economics of shifting to a no checked luggage policy similar to Ryanair’s move in this direction.
Well I was glad to see that this applies to tickets purchased after 9/14/09 since we are flying AA to Brussels in September.Luckily I have bought our tickets. Though I am definitely trying to pare down my luggage and think we will each only have one checked bag I usually like to take a duffel that I can check on the flight back home. We will be in Belgium and France for three weeks and though I know three weeks or three months or three days are supposed to require the same amount of items I get sick of wearing the same things over and over. And I always acquire quite a few things at the markets in Provence.
Three weeks isn’t that long, and AA has a generous carry-on allowance. I believe your bag can weigh as much as 40 lbs and can be as large as 45 inches. You can always carry-on for the flight over, mail your new purchases (including some new clothes) back home at the end of your trip, and carry-on again for the flight back. Much easier…you can do it.
