Bob and Andy Bestor at Gemut.com produced an excellent report on renting cars in Europe. On the RS site there are continuous questions about renting cars, insurance needs, IDP'S, drop off charges, pickup charges and so on. In the report provided by Gemut most every question asked here is answered. The CDW provided by credit card vs purchasing with the rental company would still be an individual decision based on your comfort level even though the Bestor's recommend coverage through your credit card in countries where accepted. It is a lengthy report but it is detailed and worth reading if you plan on renting a car in Europe.
