A good insurance story

Not sure quite where to post this, but here goes. Had a trip to Paris all planned and ready to go and ... government shutdown. Waited as long as we could but finally had to cancel.

Had purchased a travel health policy from UHC based on previous good experience. Contacted them on the off chance I could get a refund, and whaddaya know, no muss no fuss a credit appeared on my credit card almost immediately.

So hats off to them for helping make a bad situation a little better.

Hi Phred

Is UHC, United Health Care?

I am going to Paris for the very first time next fall and will be spending 6 nights in Paris. I feel that I need to get travel insurance. Was thinking of calling Allianz but will also try UHC.

That’s good but a few more details would be helpful. Was this a “cancel for any reason” policy? If not, what was the reason and what information if any did they ask for? Not meaning to pry into your personal situation but you did raise it, and it’s not at all self evident why the government shutdown would be a reason to have to cancel a trip to Paris, and why this would be covered by what is described as a health policy.

Slate I believe you are misunderstanding. This wasn't one of those full blown policies that covers everything from alien invasion to a hangnail. It was just to cover health situations while traveling. I purposely make my plane tix and hotels refundable because that's how I have to plan these days. So it was just a simple policy, and they simply agreed to cancel.

Got it, thank you for clarifying. I see now that you are referring to a premium refund and policy cancellation rather than a claim paid.
