A funny thing happened to me at SeaTac

I flew out of SeaTac on June 20. I arrived at the south terminal (A Gates) on a rental car bus. I got off the bus and followed some other people up to a what appeared to be a security check on the 2nd floor. There was a line at the check and a woman at the head of the line checking boarding passes. She said I could not use that check point; I would have to use another one down stairs, and pointed to an escalator to the first floor.

When I got to the downstairs checkpoint, there was absolutely no line. I walked up to the desk, showed them my ID, then went to the conveyer belt and put on my bag to be X-rayed. I was through in seconds, then went up escalators to the gate level. When I got up to the gate level, I could see people waiting to get to the other checking area.

What's going on? Was the place I first tried to go into an express checkpoint, where it's supposed to be faster? But everybody uses it, so it's actually slower?

The downstairs checkpoint is brand new in the past few weeks. I flew out on June 6th and that was the first day it was in operation. It was empty that day as well. I don’t think that many people know about it.

Right up the escalator from there is the older security checkpoint at the far southern end of SeaTac - that’s called Checkpoint 2. It’s TSA Precheck and Clear only.

The new checkpoint - Checkpoint 1 - is a general lane, open to all.

I fly to/from Seattle a lot. The TSA lines used to be LONG. So then they came up with a system for reserving a TSA time. It works fairly well, I just make an appointment a couple days in advance. However, ever since I started to make appointments, lines have become quite manageable in the "regular" lines. Perhaps its because I'm typically on an early afternoon flight?

The last two times I have flown out of Sea-Tac, I have used the TSA/Clear-only checkpoints (2 and 5?). There was no wait at all at 2 and minimal wait at 5. I'm nervous for my next trip, as these experiences have made me more open to flying out of Sea-Tac, which I have historically HATED.

SEA is our home airport. We flew out of there again just over a week ago. Total sh**show. We have Global and Clear and could barely go to that area as everything was so congested. Even the lounges had waits, but were able to get into one of the Alaskan ones. I always try to pack my patience here but it’s hard.
