A few questions regarding STATravel.com and inter-europe flights

I called in and asked this question, but apparently when you call in and book a ticket, with a student fare, you are told to purchase an ISIC card, which is an international student card. They are 22$ each, which is not a big deal, they have some OK deals, but I will probably not end up using it when I go back to Europe.

My question is, apparently when you buy online, it does not make you purchase the ISIC card, but there is a small disclaimer on the bottom of the email saying that you have to show student verification AT the airport....I mean, I have my college ID, and NW airlines never asked me last time (I used a different student site to purchase last year), so I am wondering if I should risk not getting them or not.

so has anyone ever gone through this site and been OK without getting the ISIC card?

BTW , itinerary :

Fly into Frankfurt, Munich, Prague, then to Amsterdam, London, home. 16 days, December 25th to January.

My second question is, what is the fastest/cheapest way from Prague to Amsterdam? Via flight or overnight train is fine! One way...thanks!!

Firstly let me say that within the airline business STA are widely respected. My first job in the airline I work for required me to balance the monthly accounts of various travel companies - I never found even a small error in STA's returns, that's almost unique.

A lot of the way STA trades depends on good will. They sell tickets to Bone Fide students and in return we give some massive discounts. It's an old fashioned term but it's a 'gentleman's agreement'* and it works well, but we expect students to play their part. Sometimes in this life, we take people at their word, if you tell us that you hold an ISIC card we believe you, but we expect you to be honest. We may ask to see it but mostly we don't have the time, airports are often very busy places.

There's still a place for honesty, honour and integrity in business transactions and it would be a sad day if that ever changed.

As for the Prague to Amsterdam trip: I'd be inclined to take the overnight train. You save the cost of a night's hotel room and you give yourself a little extra time to explore the atractions of Amsterdam once you arrive.

  • sorry about such a sexist term as 'gentleman's agreament' if somebody could enlighten me about a similar phrase that notes the fact that ladies play an equal role in these contracts - I'd be obliged.

Thanks AL!

I only ask, because I never saw a note, or disclaimer about having to get the ISIC card until i read the email thoroughly, down to the bottom of the pages, in the tiny text, after I already purchased the tickets via the website, haha.

Have you ever heard of anyone being asked for there ISIC cards at an airport?

actually, our itinerary changed!

Frankfurt-munich-Prague-Athens-London.

It all depends.

If we're massively overbooked on a flight ( yeah I know that's just plain wrong - selling seats that can't possibly exist ) and we need to offload some passengers and we don't want to give away a lot of cash in 'Denied Boarding Vouchers': it's quite possible we'll behave very badly by making sure all passengers have all necessary documentation and offload those that don't.

Did I mention something about honour, honesty and integrity ?

Try substituting sly, devious and and underhand.

I've been asked for my ISIC when I've used STA Travel to book flights in the US as I check in so I would think it's the same for all trips. This is only for STA Travel, however, as other sites such as Student Universe (run by Orbitz) don't require such ID.

Thank you David, looks like we will be picking them up before we leave!
