A Dream Come True: Sleeping Bunk Beds

https://www.outlookindia.com/travel/air-new-zealand-introduces-sleeping-bunk-beds-for-passengers-travelling-long-distance-news-205545

No more trying and pretending to sleep more or less in a bolt upright position.

Air New Zealand puts an end to boring, long and tiring flight journeys. The airline provides bunk-bed style pods to make passengers feel more comfortable and relaxed. The bunk-bed-style pods will be accessible to premium as well as regular economy passengers. It is seen as the world’s first airline to have built it once the new cabins are installed by 2024.

Sleeping sessions will be scheduled.

Economy class prices are estimated at $500

Paying an extra $500 for 4 hours of lay flat sleep? I'd do that. And if they let me book a double session (8hours) for $1000 that's still cheaper than your own lie flat seat in business class.

I'd have a hard time paying that much. Maybe on a super-exhausting trip to somewhere like Australia or New Zealand. The overnight to Europe is really bad for me, but I know I'll have access to a bed within 12 hours of arrival--usually earlier if I'm willing to mess up my body clock. (Yes, I lack willpower when the bed is calling me.)

QANTAS is also planning on this for long haul flights to Australia - it takes 23 hours to get to Sydney non stop from London. Flight attendant acquaintances are not happy about it as they envision problems getting sleepy passengers to adhere to changeover times and aren't keen on having to change bedding on upper bunk beds.

Austin Nomad, what do you mean by getting sleepy passengers to adhere to changeover times? Like getting them the heck out of the plane??

Probably getting them out of the sleep pods at the end of their allotted time.

This. It changes the cabin crew role to one akin to a nightclub bouncer having to deal with slightly inebriated grumpy patrons, but with the added complication of turbulence.

I've been wondering about that very issue. The resulting arguments could be a source of noise at a time when planes are usually fairly quiet.

From memory, the QANTAS proposal has these bunks in a separate area in the luggage hold that would be pressurised and heated and accessed by a stairway from the main cabin.

Love the idea but don’t think the four hour time slots will work , . As cited by others this will leave crew in the position of having to wake tired people up after four hours . Some people do not wake well at all .

If one could book it for entire flight I’d be in - even for 1000 more for 8 or more hours .

I do usually fly prem economy now as I’m just getting too achy ( bad hips ) for being totally cramped in economy- but I can’t justify the extra for first class ( often several thousand more ) when I could skip the food and wine and just want the lay flat sleeping pod .
