Munich to Fussen

We will be in Munich in June and taking a day trip to Neuschwanstein. We will take the train to Fussen then bus to ticket office for castle (yes, reserving castle admission in advance). We prefer to leave early in a.m.(weekday) so the Bayern ticket won't be good for us. Should we reserve and pay for our train to Fussen in advance or just go to the station that morning and buy a round trip? If we do buy roundtrip can we get on any train going back (we're not sure how long we'll want to stay after castle tour, maybe the hike to the bridge...)or do we have to specify which train we wish to come back on in advance?

Depending on how early in the morning you want to start, you can use a Bayern-Ticket. Just buy a regular ticket to the first station you will stop at after 9 AM. If you want to arrive in Füssen before 9, you can still save money on the trip back by using a Bayern-Ticker for that portion of the trip. You can buy your ticket in advance, but the trains to Füssen are only regional trains, and there are no reservations on those trains. Also, tickets for regional trains are not train specific; get on any train.

"...we're not sure how long we'll want to stay after castle tour, maybe the hike to the bridge..." The 30-min tour of N'stein involves 5 hours of transport if return to Munich, no matter when you leave, and might not justify the time (most of a day) and the expense, especially if you have no other travel objectives there. If you're interested in Ludwig, Herrenchiemsee Palace, on an island in Chiemsee (lake), might be better. There's more to see, do and learn, and the trip to Prien is only one hour from Munich by direct train: PALACE INFORMATION PHOTO OF ISLAND AND PALACE

Thanks for the info. So the Bayern ticket's time availability is based on your arrival time at your destination, and not your departure time? So if I took a train from Munich that left prior to 9am on a weekday, but arrived in Fussen after 9am, the Bayern ticket could be used? And it would also be good for the bus to Neuschwanstein?

No, the Bayern-Ticket becomes valid at 9 AM, from whatever station you reach next. I only said "if you want to arrive in Füssen before 9" because obviously, then, it won't be useable for any part of your trip. However, you can start your travel by buying a regular ticket to the first station you come to after 9 AM. The Bayern-Ticket is valid for the bus from Füssen to Hohenschwangau as long as you board it after 9 AM.
