Rail Travel In Switzerland

Bob, I don't know the answer, but you may find it helpful to have a look at THIS page from the Railpass section of this website. There's a good chart that shows the discounts with the various Passes. You could also download the free PDF Railpass Guide, as it makes a good reference source. I spent a lot of time analyzing the various passes trying to find the best one for my trip last September. Going through all the various lifts and combinations of Passes is VERY complicated, so I eventually just made an "educated guess" and chose one of the Passes (based on the specific trains and lifts I'd be using). Bob ,more information would help , When are your planned dates of travel , do you have rough idea of where in the Oberland you will stay and what you think you would like to do while you are there ? Have you already purchased a swiss-german pass ? We were in this part of switzerland for eight days this past October ,using swiss passes which worked out very well for us . More detail will help in advising you .

Thank you for your input. We will be in the area May 1 to 3. 2 of us, both seniors, will be traveling. I would like to travel to the top of both sides of the valley. Not sure where we will stay. I have not purchased any rail passes as yet. Looking forward to more input.

Is your Swiss pass a Eurail Pass? If yes, it will do just fine until you get to Interlaken Ost. From there into Lauterbrunnen and up to both mountain tops it will only cover 25% of the overall fare. If it's a true Swiss pass or card, it will cover 50% of the fare from Muerren to the Schilthorn and 50% of the fare from Wengen to the Jungfraujoch.

I am getting to a resolution. Your input is helping. The Swiss card looks very interesting. I am not sure as to how restrictive it is as to entering and leaving the country. We plan to enter via train from Germany and to fly out of Geneva to USA. If that qualifies for the Swiss card it would be our best option. Thanks for helping me resolve my issues.

Hey, Bob~ I don't know if this information will be of use to you, depending on how you are getting to Switzerland, but someone else may find it useful. If you are arriving by Eurail into Spiez, I highly recommend taking the ferry from Spiez to Interlaken. When we arrived in Spiez, we overheard another couple mention that the Eurail pass covered the ferry as well as rail travel to Interlaken, so we decided to hop on the boat. It was a fantastic mini-cruise with wonderful view of the passing Swiss scenery.

Well I think we have come to a conclusion. Thanks to all your feedback and the rail dept at Rick Steves. It looks like we will get a German Rail Pass and a Swiss Card. We will do a point to point in Italy. You have all been a great help. THANKS
