My husband, myself, and another couple plan to spend 8 days in the Marbella area. Any suggestions for day trips? We hope to go to Tangier one day...any suggestions for that also?

Marbella is close to Ronda and Gibraltar. Both are worthwhile day trips. I was blown away by caves, especially St. Michael's cave, in Gibraltar.St. Michael's cave has been converted to concert venue. The Barbary apes and the view across to Morocco were equally astounding. Ronda has been covered by RS in previous videos.

Presuming car hire. Malaga is just less than an hour each way, Antequera just over an hour each way.
Many pueblo blancos if you want to take a day's tour. 'We hope to go to Tangier one day...any suggestions for that also?' - I have, obviously, no idea of your experience or what you want or expect from Tangier but I counsel against.
