We're planning on traveling along the road next May. What are people's experiences in how to move between the towns. Is a car necessary or will the train put us near enough to the wineries?
The Route du Vin is definitely a driving trip. There are over 60 villages in little over 100 miles. Obviously the villages are very close to one another. It is made for leisurely driving and you'll want to make many stops along the way. I don't know how you'd do it using public transportation. For sure you'd miss a lot.
While a car is helpful, it isn't necesscary. We spent a week in Alsace, using Riquewihr as our base, w/o a car. We walked from village to village, and wineries were usually in or near the center of the village. And then sometimes we took a bus back to our start point. But if you want to cover the entire Strasbourg-Mulhouse route, that wouldn't work; you'll need a car.
