We are planning a week long trip to the Amalfi Coast the beginning of April. Anyone have an itinerary they would suggest? Where to stay and how to get around? I am being told not to rent a car. Should we stay in one place all week and do day trips or move midweek? Thanks for your help. Sue
I think it's fun to move midweek. I'd suggest splitting your time between Sorrento & Positano. From Sorrento - which is itself a lot of fun - you can do day trips to places like Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, or Mt. Vesuvius. From Positano you can do day trips to Ravello, Amalfi town, Capri, or even Paestum. You don't need or want a car. Travel is easy using local ferries (the most fun) or buses. Sorrento also has local train service - the "Circumvesuviana" - which will take you to Pompeii or Herculaneum or all the way to Naples.
My daughter and I spent a week on the Amalfi Coast without a car. Good advice to split time between Sorrento and Positano. The local SITA bus runs from Sorrento right along the coast to Salerno which will enable you to visit all towns on the route. Ravello is a must see. Also there are regular boat services along the coast from Sorrento.
Hi Sue! I've spent both split weeks and a full week on the Amalfi Coast, and definitely would recommend a full week in a base. We rented a house for 11 people; it's easy to find small apartments for rent as well. Our base was Ravello, which shouldn't be missed, but I would check out Amalfi, Praiano, Atrani for apartments. SITA buses stop all over the coast, and you can visit anywhere you would like (Sorrento, Positano, Ravello, Capri) from Amalfi via bus or ferry. Even day trips to Paestum and Pompeii can be booked out of Amalfi. No need whatsoever for a car. Don't miss the gardens in Ravello, Cumpa Cosimo restaurant there, the Duomo in Amalfi, hiking up to Tiberius' villa on Capri, and just relaxing and wandering around beautiful Positano. Seafood, pasta, and anything with lemon (limoncello!). Enjoy!
