My boyfriend and I are flying into the Barcelona airport (BCN) separately. My flight arrives 4 hours before his flight. Is there anywhere that I can safely wait for him (perhaps a cafe, etc.) after I get my bags and go through customs?

Why not just wait at the airport? There are plenty of shops and restaurants there.
Barcelona's airport has three "terminals" which are actually housed in the same building in one long line....not terribly large by most standards. Since terminal B is in the center, pick that one as the most central. One of the small restaurants in the public areas on the ground floor is Pans and Company.
