Train Service

We'll be in Florence in September and would like to take the rain from Florrence to Sorrent for the 2nd leg of our trip. Could you answer a couple of questions: 1. Is there a train from Florence to Sorrento? 2. How long does it take to get there?
3. Cost? Also we are renting a car in Florence, to stay in Tuscany, can we drop the car off in Sorrento? What would be easier, train to Sorrento or drive car to Sorrento? Thanks

I agree that the German Rail site is your best timetable source, but it doesn't show timetables for private railroads Like the Circumvesuviana which you would take from Naples to Sorrento. The fastest way to get from Florence to Sorrento is to take a Trenitalia high-speed train from Firenze S. M. Novella to Napoli Centrale. Trains run at least once/hour and the trip takes just under three hours. The standard 2nd class fare is €68.00. Booked well in advance at trenitalia.com, you can get a discount fare as low as €9.00. However, by now the allotted number of tickets at that fare will be long gone. You still might be able to get a €19.00, €29.00, or €39.00 fare. Circumvesuviana commuter trains from Naples to Sorrento depart from the lower level of Napoli Centrale. Trains run about twice/hour, the ride takes a little over one hour, and the fare is less than €5.00.
