Layover in frankfort

Hello, I'll be flying us airways to Frankfort Germany from USA. Then to Venice on a lufthansa flight. Arriving at terminal 1c, departing terminal 1ab. I'll only have a 50 minute layover. Will that be enough time to make the flight to Venice? Will my luggage be checked from home airport in USA to Venice or will I have to claim luggage and go through customs in Frankfort? I'll be flying business class/first in case that will make a difference. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

If the entire trip is on one ticket, they will check your luggage through to Venice, where you will go through customs. You will have to go through immigration (pass post control) in Frankfurt, but not customs. There are three concourses, A, B, and C at Terminal 1. I don't know why it says 1ab unless they don't know if the plane will dock at A or B. Regardless of which concourse, you'll have to come down to the central area and go back out the other concourse. That will mean going back through security. In 2002, we connected from Concourse A to Concourse B in less than an hour. It was just after 9-11, and we had to go through 3 security checks and still made it.

susan, You might check with the airline to find out if your flight is a Code Share flight. As U.S. Airways is a Star Alliance partner with Lufthansa, that's very likely the case, so your luggage will be checked through to Venice. I'd suggest asking the Agent when you check-in at your home airport and check your Luggage. The Bar Code tag they place on the luggage will reflect the end destination. Your transfer time of 50-minutes in Frankfurt is VERY short, but it's probably a "legal connection". I had a connection in Frankfurt last year on a flight to Rome that was exactly ONE HOUR. I questioned the time, but was told it was reasonable (however the Flight Attendant said "don't stop for coffee on the way to your next flight"). As it turned out, I was at the next departure gate in 20-minutes (just in time for boarding). One thing that will help is that you're flying Business Class. That will allow you to disembark straight away when you arrive in Frankfurt. I think that's one factor that helped me get to the next gate so quickly. I can't afford to travel Business Class, but was sitting in the first section in Coach behind Business Class. Happy travels!

Hello. I've recently checked with the airlines who said my luggage will be checked through to venice, the layover time is the minimal to get through the airport but should be ok, and i should have a first class line to get through passport check. I appreciate your help. It was great to actually hear from someone who has done this before. I'm traveling alone with my teenage daughter and really need this to go smoothly. Thanks for the help.

Here a comment from a Frankfurt (please note the spelling) local. The minimum connecting time is 45 minutes and Terminal 1 is actually well designed. There are two critical issues you should monitor and act accordingly. One is the lines at immigration. The actual immigration takes place on the upper floor of terminal 1b. So after disembarkment you'll walk from 1c to the upstairs of 1b. You will then be in the Eastern half of 1b. Should the lines be too long just note that there also are immigration desks in the exact same position in the Western half of the building, on the same floor just around the corner (more or less). If your Venice flight's gate ends up being in 1b then don't worry, all you have to do is go downstairs after immigration. It's likely that you will be bussed to the aircraft. If your gate is in 1a and the gate number is below 25 there is a walk but also not too long. If the gate number is A26 and above it's quite a walk and you (unfortunately) would have to hurry. Again, make yourself known to the local staff. They're very helpful. However, usually flights from the US arrive ahead of schedule due to the jetstream tail wind.

Please note there is no fast track line for immigration for business passengers at Frankfurt as far as I know, unlike London. I know if you fly first class on Lufthansa that they will have an escort and a car to get you to where you want to go.
