I am looking to to from Basel to Paris in September the morning of the 5th. It looks like there is only one train that evening. Don't they run more often?

They do. Full schedules for September are not posted yet. Just look at the same day of the week for next week or next month for the complete schedule. Use bahn.de.

I just queried the German Rail (Bahn) website for Basel SBB to Paris for Sept 5, starting at 8 :00, and got 4 connections between 8:00 and noon, two of them by direct TGV, more in the afternoon. What website are you using? From what station in Basel (there are three)? However, 1. You cannot get reservations this early. It's generally up to 92 days in advance. 2. For a route entirely outside of Germany, German Rail does not sell tickets online (or show fares). To book online on German Rail, use Basel Bad Bahnhof to Paris and specify a stopover in Karlsruhe. You'll get a 5 hr connection by ICE from Basel to Karlsruhe and TGV from there to Paris. With this route, you can get a non-refundable, train specific Europa-Spezial ticket for €49. This is not the fastest route, but shows there is more than just an evening train available.
