trains and luggage

We are planning a trip to Italy and will be traveling by train from Rome to Florence and Florence to Venice. Hopefully, we have selected hotels within walking distance of the train stations, but we are wondering about luggage on the trains, space, stowing, etc.

Anna, The answer will depend to some extent on the specifics of your luggage. If you're travelling with gargantuan luggage items, you'll likely have to store those in the luggage racks, which are usually located at one end of the cars. Be sure to keep an eye on them, especially when the train is nearing or in stations, as bags DO "disappear" at times. Smaller "carry-on size" items can be stored either on the racks above your seat, or if the car isn't too packed on the seat or floor beside you. You may find it very helpful to have a look at This Outstanding Website, as it should answer all your questions. Happy travels!

Plenty of space. Most everyone on the train has luggage. Carryon size bags will fit on the overhead racks and large pieces go into the bin near the entrance to the car. There is constant concern about luggage theft but we have never had any problems. We do use a light cable lock to secure our bags to each other and/or to something solid. For bags on the overhead rack we will snap a strap around one of the ribs of the rack. Just to prevent someone from grabbing and running. But we have never seen that eithre.
