My wife and I will be traveling from Barcelona to Provence. Our first thought was to take the train to Perpignan and rent a car there and then take the train back again at the end of the trip. Would it be a better idea to rent a car from Barcelona since we will be returning it there as well? Or is the train a better call?

Just drive. Nimes is only about three and a half hours away. Either going or coming (whenever you have the spare time) hug the coast south of the border instead of staying on the freeway.

I agree with Ed. We stayed in Collioure and it was very interesting. worth a stop or an overnite.
