Nancy -

The resource Kent gave you is good. www.sncf.fr will be helpful too once they are no longer on strike.

Link to the rail schedules in English (http://www.voyages-sncf.com/dynamic/_SvHomePage?_DLG=SvHomePage&_CMD=cmdHomepageUK&WB=HP&rfrr=4685ac17fd2e7656e4918c53b246a3f7)

One thing to remember is that during off season this train does not run daily. Part of the route is TGV and the remainder is on smaller (and slower) trains. You will have to change at least twice as there is unfortunately not a direct route. TGV requires you to have a reservation and I would do the same for all chanes as well.

Driving is an option but will not decrease your travel time. The tunnel is notorious for accidents.

This is the site I use - http://www.chamonix.com/page.php?page=0&r=accueil&ling=en

We took the train journey this summer. We went to the Gare De Lyon the day before and were told we were lucky to get reservations. The trip we took went through Lyon, Annecy, and a very small train up to Chamonix. It was very scenic and the connections though tight were doable.

Once in Chamonix, we were trying to take the gondola over Mt. Blanc into Italy. Even in July the weather conditions were miserable and the high lifts were closed.

Best of luck. Chamonix is glorious!
