Rental car in Germany

If I take my car rental into Switzerland do I need some kind of decal and if so what is the cost. I also want to go from Locarno to Florence Italy, then back to Fussen Germany.

It's called a vignette. It costs 40 Swiss francs. It is your toll for using Swiss motorways. You can buy it at the border, or at nearby gas stations or post offices.

When traveling from Germany into Austria, the border we crossed was well marked with a sign indicating we had to stop. It happened to be a Shell station. They had a line inside with people buying them. When crossing from Italy into Switzerland, we had to slow down and they had police looking for your sticker. If you didn't have one for Switzerland they waved you over. 40 euro sounds about right.

Thanks Tom,
I heard somthing about that. Don't seem to remember anything like it when I lived in Europe but I left in 2000. Maybe a relatively new Swiss idea

You need a vignette on Swiss highways since 1985, so it's not a brand new idea.

If you drive on an autobahn in Austria, you'll need a separate vignette for that country as well.
