We are cruising out of Rome through Greece on 10/29 returning morning of 11/5, and staying in Rome 11/5 and 11/6, flying home 11/7. We THOUGHT we had booked a Rome excursion for the day we return, 11/5, which would take us from the pier, tour the high points of Rome (7 hours)and deposit us at the airport, where we would shuttle to the hotel. Just learned TODAY not true! Tour is for those RETURNING to the ship. (Didn't even know that one could hop on and off the ship!) Desperate to make alternate plans to make best use of time in Rome without spending a gazillion Euros. Ideas? We can transfer from pier to airport for 30E each and free shuttle from there to hotel but that sounds like it would take too much time. Also we want to see Vatican Museum and St. Peters the next day; ideas for best tours there? We like historical and art detail. Mostly we just want to make our 2 days in Rome count!
You had answers when you posted this earlier under "To the Boot." Are you expecting different answers here?
Frank, I am new to this. When i realized I had posted under Italy and that a transportation topic was available, I thought this might catch more folks. SOrry if it seems redundant.
Well I'm not sure about getting from the pier to the city, but as far as tours, you should check out the vatican website.

They have 2-hour tours at 10:30 AM for €23/person which includes admission and the tour/headset. You must book in advance, so you'd want to hurry! I've always just explored the museum and St. Peters on my own with help from guidebooks, so I'm not sure about tours at the basilica. Like I said - I've never taken tours, so it'd be good to get some advice from a few other people as well :)
If you're a history buff, be sure to check out the Roman Forum. It's pretty amazing- a 2,000 year old city in the middle of modern Rome. Admission is free. Be sure to get a GOOD guidebook that can give you a great overview of Rome and the best way to see the highlights in 2 days. The first time I was there I used Top 10 Rome - it was great! Rick also has great self-guided walks and tours of all the important historical stuff.
