We are arriving in Paris at CDG and wonder if anyone has recommendations on transport to our hotel in the St.Germain area. We are flying all night so don't want to carry luggage but don't want to spend a lot on a taxi
You should consider what I call van service. There are many people on this website who have their own preferences. When I go to Paris w/my family this Christmas, I think I'll be using www.parishuttle.com. I think the prices for 6 are the cheapest. Shop around. My gut tells me that all van type services will be similar. Good luck!
Your cheapest alternative to the RER/metro would be to take the Roissybus non-stop from CDG to Opera (€8.60) and a taxi from there to your hotel. Or take Air France bus #4 (€14) to Gare Montparnasse (one stop at Gare de Lyon) and a taxi (short ride) from there.
I am planning my first Rick Steves tour for next year and will be flying into Paris, CDG also. I did a search online for the airport and found that there are a couple different options to get to your hotel.
One web-site you might want to check out is
Airport-connection.com They offer shuttles direct to your hotel for 45euros for two people. A bit expensive but convenient.
Jackie,
I would try Golden Air Shuttle.
In the past I've used the Metro twice and it was not that bad with minimun luggage, but all those steps are still a pain. I'm in Great Shape for a 50 something, but the Shuttle is So Much easier.
Last July we used Golden Air both ways to Hotel Muguet and it was truly a breeze.
Jim
we just returned from France and took a taxi from CDG to our hotel in St Germain. It cost 42 Euros and was well worth it. We didn';t have multiple stops with a van carrying folks to different hotels all over Paris and didn't have to worry about toting luggage on a train.
The great thing about Paris is that transportation options are next to endless.
To summarize, your options are this:
1) RER line B - taken directly from the airport
Pro - cheap as dirt, leaves often, no dependence on a driver who might not show
Con - dragging your life up and down multiple, steep staircases
2A) taxi from airport directly to your hotel
Pro - convenient
Con - can get pricey
2B) RER to train station - taxi to hotel
Pro - less luggage heart ache, price decreases
Con - still a little pricey
3) shuttles
Pro - many to choose from, some run specifically by the airport (ex. Roissybus)
Con - picks up/ drops off at a specific spot in the city
I've done the RER thing and the taxi thing. Both can work well, depending on your situation. If you decide to take a taxi, try to arrange (and double check 4 times!!) everything in advance.
Bon courage!
