Clearing customs

We are going to Italy, our first overnight being Genoa. Our plane connects through Rome -- we change planes and fly on to Genoa. Will we have to clear customs in Rome or in Genoa? Our luggage will be checked through to Genoa. We have 1 hour and 10 minutes between planes.

Immigration(passport check) will be in Rome. Customs (the stuff you're bringing into the EU) will be in Genoa. In addition, in Rome you will also have to pass through a security screening before you reach your gate to Genoa.
