Has anyone used the Trenitalia mini fares? Does the fare necessarily mean that the train car will be different from 1st or 2nd class? Also, does anyone know if you are able to keep your luggage with you or do you have to leave it in a communal area when you board the train? Thank you!

There is no mini class, it is just pricing. You get to use the same seats in second class regardless of how much you pay for your ticket. You can place carryon size bags on the overhead rack above you seat. But space is limited and could be full. Sometimes there will be a little space in an A shaped area where to seat back meet. The common area is fine. We have used it for dozens of trips, used by the locals, and never had any problems. If overly concerned then use a cable lock to secure your bag to something.
