You have all been such a great resource! Our latest: We want to travel by train from Cinque Terre to a city in southern France where we can rent a car (for Provence time) then return it for a train ride to Barcelona. What French city is the best for this transfer? Travelling in mid-Sept. Thanks!

Carrie, I guess what I would do is figure out the train connections between Monterosso (or other 5T) and Nice or probably better Marseille. I would probably want Marseille because that would shorten the train ride to Barcelona. Hmmm or maybe Arles, depending on what towns/villages in Provence you're hoping to see. I would compare train connections but then also of course the cost of the car rental. We returned a car in Arles that we rented through europcar in 2006 which worked nicely for us. We were also pleased with everything and everyone with europcar.com.

If you want to have the most flexibility in where you stop and what you see in Provence (or beyond), I'd pick up a car in Nice and return it in Montpellier.
