Italy by train

My son (11) and I are flying into Milan on a Wednesday morning and planning to travel by train to C.T. We're staying there for 3 nights, then going to Florence for 2 nights and then Rome for 4 nights. While in Rome, we also want to spend a day in Naples. We're looking for recommendations on train travel. Are there passes that we should look into that would save us money? Thanks very much!

Jim: Usually within Italy a pass is less economical than individual tickets. You have to pay for reservations when you have a pass, anyway, so there is a somewhat hidden cost. We did a three week trip and had 5 train days Milan to Venice, Venice to CT, CT to Siena, Orvieto to Rome, Rome to Milan. A pass would have cost much more than the 5 tickets. Regionale trains will cost less, but take longer and are not as comfortable as the ES trains. Be sure to look at Trenitalia's site http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html and estimate your travel times and costs. An important part of planning. When you arrive, buy your tickets as soon as you can, preferably a couple of days before your segment. Ask if there are discounts, especially the "mini" fare. There have been many posts here about this issue and detail on the mini fare. You might want to search the archives. Ciao!
