Can you buy the ticket for the ferry from Barcelona to Rome on the day of the travel, or do you need to book it before? We will arrive there in the morning and would like to continue in the evening toward Rome with the ferry.

Yes, unless you're travelling on a very busy summer or other holiday long weekend. Barcelona-Italy ferries are rarely completely full. Remember however that ferries don't go to Rome - they go to Civitavecchia, which is an hour by train to Rome. Barcelona departures are usually in the evening. And you can buy tickets in town from travel agencies, or at the port, as well. You'll have to research what company is better for you.
