6 hour layover in Amsterdam airport: Suggestions?

I got a great deal on a flight to Barcelona last fall. AND it comes with a 6 hour day-time layover at the Amsterdam airport. Any suggestions on how to spend my time in this airport?

I confess, this is my first line of research.

You could have a quick look at Amsterdam. Trains to Amsterdam Centraal running several times per hour, taking around 15 mins.

If going to Amsterdam, limit yourself to a walk and something to eat or drink.
The area west of the Centraal Station (to your right) is the best introduction to the city. Brouwersgracht. Prinsengracht with the Noorderkerk (»North Church«). Keizersgracht with the Westerkerk (»West Church«). At the eastern end of the canals the river Amstel. The complex of the Jewish History Museum, with the Portuguese Synagogue. At can all be done within your timeframe. And Google Maps will show you the way.

Thanks all for your quick responses and suggestions. I had no idea it could be so easy to take a trip into town. Yes, a true layover and checking my one carryon at the airport is a great choice. Scheduled to arrive at 8:35. Scheduled to depart at 14:30. I try to adjust my internal clock as soon as I get on the plane. If I remember to take my melatonin on the plane, I could be ready for fresh air and sunshine when I arrive in Amsterdam. A canal tour sounds like a great idea.

For others who may be interested, I also found there are a few convenient tours you can take right from the airport. AND there is a branch of a major art museum if you don't want to venture out. No wonder this place has such high ratings!

Sadly the airport art museum is no more:(
If you need to use a locker to store your gear, be sure to use the ones in the public area of the airport after customs/baggage claim.
