Power in Italy

I have seen two different adapters for Italy -- the Std. European (non-grounded), which I already own, and another 3-pronged grounded one. Any idea how I can tell when I might need the 3-pronged one? Don't want to buy if I don't have to. Thx!

Here's what Rick says in his Italy book: two prong adapter for Italy. I've also seen the 3-pronged ones but don't know if you need it in Italy, I'm only bringing several 2-prong plug adapters and no converter because all my appliances are 100 - 240 volts.

Laura answered my question (above) re 3-prong plugs, in same topic in General Europe section, 2 prong adapter is all we need.

The two pin "Euro plug" is technically only legal for 2 1/2 amps (600W) or less. That is good for a battery charger, but not for a hair dryer. For over 2 1/2 amps you are supposed to use a grounded plug, but most American appliances are double insulated and don't use a ground. Best idea, buy a hair dryer over there.
