We plan to stay in Normandy for one day most likely Caen and visit the Amercian D-day beaches and the Caen Memorial museum before we will need to board the 20:00 evening ferry from Aerromanches to Portsmouth. What would be the best location to stay at and since we will be arriving by train from Paris how should we get arround?

Are you dead sure the ferry leaves from Arromanches? The only one I know of in that area departs from Ouistreham (the Caen ferryport).
The only way you'll see it all in one day is to rent a car. There are car places across the street from the Caen station and there's a bus (schedule unknown) that runs out to Ouistreham. Wild guess is that it would have a run to coincide with your ferry departure. There's no place to dump a car at the ferry terminal.
Yes you are right about the ferry termianl. I had the wrong city.
