We are a family of 5 travelling from Salzburg to Vienna next week. I thought all along I could get this special discount pass called the Vorteil S-Card right at the station, but it seems as if I am wrong and I have to apply and send in pictures, etc. Isn't there anything like the Bayern Ticket for Germany that we can use in Austria for a good price?

The Bayern-Ticket requires use of regional trains. There is something in Austria called the Einfach Raus pass. It is for the entire country of Austria. It, like the Bayern-Ticket, is also only for regional trains, for 2-5 people, and cost €28/day. It never sells out; you can buy it the day of travel.
I think going from Salzburg to Vienna by regional trains (6 hours) would be rather tedious.
