Car insurance in France

We rented a car through Rhino Car Hire and Alamo is the provider. I called Alamo at the Marseilles Provence airport and the Super CDW will be 15 E per day for 10 days. Does the Travel Guard Insurance provide the same benefits, except for a $250 deductible? Has anybody had to collect on insurance and have good advice about the process?

Lorraine,

A couple of years ago we rented a vehicle through Europcar and I opted for the Super CDW even though I had a $250 deductible on my VISA coverage. While we were at the American Cemetery in Normandy, someone decided to sideswipe our car causing extensive damage. Of course, they didn't stick around. The Super CDW covered 100% of the damages.

Buying extra insurance is nothing more than playing the odds. This time I got lucky because I usually don't buy the extra coverage. I have since then for the peace of mind.

Have fun!

At today's exchange rate, 150 euros (the cost of super CDW) is $196.

With coverage from the rental car company, you don't have to pay for damages and wait for reimbursement from a 3rd party, plus pay a $250 deductible.

Sounds to me like Super CDW is the better deal.
