Bonjour. I'm bicycling Normandy in September. I definitely want to take in all the D Day beaches, ride up towards to Cherborg, then south & west to Mont St Michel (on my 50th!) finishing in St Malo. I'm allowing 6 days, less than 50 miles a day. What are the roads & traffic like; and are there any bike routes? Merci!
John, there are several books about cycling in France that have specific itineraries. The Lonely Planet book was very helpful to me when I planned my trip in Burgundy (for my 50th, btw), though I did not follow its itineraries that closely.
Another useful tool both for planning and on the ground are the IGN topo maps. Finally, if you are renting a bicycle chances are the folks you are renting from will be an invaluable source of itinerary advice and help.
Bon voyage!
