Scottish Highlands

My family and I are driving up to Edinburgh from London on 4th week of May, and we were thinking of staying overnight somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, I tried booking at a hotel called Laggan Gaskmore Hotel http://www.lagganhotel.co.uk/Hotel/Hotel.html but they are booked out during that period. Can anyone recommend a similar place in the same area? We are eight altogether in our family (4 children), we would like a place with the comfort of some modern amenities, and are not considering anything too off the beaten "rustic" pathways :>)

Hello William - My husband and I stayed in a beautiful apartment in the town of Fort Augustus on the sotuhern tip of Loch ness.

The apartment is one of several in a converted St. Benedictine Abbey. We stayed in "Old School Number 11": http://www.highlandclubscotland.co.uk/property/15/14

It was fantastic. The flat has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (master bedroom has en suite bath). There is a good-size "open"= area" living/dining/kitchen. The flat overlooks the courtyard below. For families, the Abbey has a large, separate game room with billiards. The town has a nice grocery store and a couple of restaurants. One good restaurant is just 1/2 block away in a nearby hotel.

For day trips - the flat is an easy, 30-mile drive to Inverness. The scenery is beautiful.

I don't recall the cost - but it was very reasonable and less than many hotels. For a family, it's ideal. The owner is Rosemary and she was great - no problems and always responded to emails.

We'd go back there in a minute.

Good luck,

p.s. - we also rented a beautiful flat in Edinburgh if you need a recommendation - however, it was only one bedroom and one [small] bath - but within walking distance of most sites.
