Hi,
I would like to take the KD boat from St. Goar to Bacharach. Where do I purchase a ticket? On the boat?
Thanks,
Wendy
The trip from St. Goar to Bacharach is up the river (to the SE. See, up and down relative to the direction of flow does count), against the current and take 70 min. Down stream, to the NW, only takes 40 min. I got rather bored by the slow pace going from St. Goar to Bacharach.
The fare is €10,50 pP either direction.
Per Lee's post, best to take the train from St. Goar to Bacharach and take the KD boat back to St. Goar. You are going
to two of my favorite places! Enjoy. You can also take the boat from St. Goar to other locations down the river and see the great castles and vineyards and then take the train back to St. Goar.
Hi,
Thanks for the replys. We are coming from Amsterdam sleeping in Bacharach. I thought we could make a stop in St. Goar and vist the castle ruins then head to Bacharach and check into the hotel. Thought taking a boat would be nice way to finish the day.

Since you are coming from the NW, going to Bacharach, taking the boat to St. Goar, and returning with the train to Bacharach probably won't work. The train between them only takes 10 min and you save 30 by going down river, but the timing of the trains will probably cost more time.
UPDATE: Probably won't make a difference which way you go. As long as you leave Koblenz by the 15:54 train, you can go to St. Goar at 16:20, have an hour to kill while you wait for the 17:20 boat. That boat gets you to Bacharach at 18:30. Or, you can continue on the 15:54 train from Koblenz, get into Bacharach at 16:31, have 44 min to check into the hotel and get your boat tickets, leave Bacharach at 17:15 on the steamship Goethe, arrive St Goar at 17:55 and catch the 18:20 train back to Bacharach at 18:31.
Be sure to show your train tickets at the ticket kiosk. You are supposed to get a 20% discount for the boat tickets. (Of course, if you decide to use railpasses, the boat is included).
Budget your time. The last K-D boat from St. Goar to Bacharach leaves St. Goar at 17:20 (5:20 PM).
We had planned to stop in St. Goar first then take boat to Bacharach to finish our day. Would this not work? Is St. Goar before or after Bacharach? I guess I'm a little confused.
St Goar comes first if you are traveling from Koblenz.
I was particularly fascinated by the castle and spent 2½, hours, just up there, not including the trolley up and walking down. I'm guessing you can't do it in 2 hours, Bahnhof to boat dock. Better plan for three. If you catch the 8:38 out of Amsterdam, you can get to St. Goar by 14:20. That gives you 3 hours to get up to the castle, see it, get down to the boat dock and buy your tickets by 17:20 for the last boat to Bacharach.
Rheinfels is one of my favorite places. For me, the fun is exploring every nook and cranny (be sure to bring a small flashlight) including the mines, which means I start first thing in the morning and am not out until lunch time.
As Lee said, it's a little walk up to the castle from the train (maybe 15 minutes up, 10 minutes down) which will add time to your stop.
I'm not sure how late the boats run. I'm usually there in September. I would expect they'll run fairly late in the summer. The ticket booth is right next to the dock so you won't have trouble finding it.
