I've heard that taxi's are pricey in Europe. What is considered "pricey?"
For example, what might one expect to pay, in Euro's, for a five mile taxi from Gare du Nord to the Eiffel Tower ?
...just curious, and thanks in advance.

Went from Gare du Nord to Londres Eiffel (not far from Tower for 11 Euros in 2005, no idea what time has done to the cost though.
You can't say taxis are pricey in all over Europe, an area ranging from far behind Moscow all the way to the Azores... E.g. a 20mins taxi ride in Frankfurt is €40 and more whereas the same ride in Berlin is €20...
Europe is a pretty broad area. In some areas taxi can be pretty cheap -- always need to compare to local transportation. AND the number of people are important. A family of three or four probably can go cheaper than a local bus/subway. If you are a sole traveler it is different. But I generally find that the London cabs are reasonable - same for Rome. It has been several years since we were in France so I have no comment.
While Frank is right (and always gives good advice)never forget that metro takes you underground and out of the traffic, is easy to get to and much faster as a result. George, Pgh
Thx everyone for your feedback.
"Geo in Pittsburgh" -- I thought about jumping on the Metro line 4 from Gare du Nord to Strasbourg Saint-Denis station, transferring to line 8 and getting out at Ecole Militaire station. (I have a Eurail Global pass which I think is valid for use on the Metro ?????)
Only problem is......I travel in a manual wheel chair and 1) I didn't want to inconvenience my able-bodied companion with lugging the wheel chair up multiple flights of stairs to get to street level. Also, 2) I myself am probably limited to climbing one flight of stairs.

Robert of Lancaster: You could also do it this way: Go around to the back of the Gare du Nord and there you will find a bus terminus. Take Bus No. 42 (it is the beginning of the route so you will get seats and room for your luggage) and get off at the stop "
RAPP-La Bourdonnais". There is an electronic board on the bus advising what the next stop will be and how many minutes 'til you get there. It is a short walk from there to Ecole Militaire metro stop, which I gather is close to your hotel.
The buses are very wheelchair accessible, by the way. At the Gare du Nord you can buy tickets for the bus/metro and ask for a bus map at the same time.
