On our Aer Lingus flight from Orlando, Florida to Bristol, UK, we have a 4 and 1/2 hour layover. Our luggage should be ticketed on to Bristol. Would we have enough time for a quick visit to Trinity College in Dublin? Thanks for your spirit of helpfulness! Ed S.
Maybe. It took about 30 minutes to get into the city center from the airport, maybe a little longer. The airport is pretty efficient and we spent maybe 5 minutes in security. However, if you are hoping to see the book of Kells, I don't think it will happen. There was a very long line when we were there. If you just want to go to Trinity College to see it, I didn't think it would be worth the stress of trying to get there and make sure you are back for your flight.
Unless you are there when they open, there are likely to be lines at the Book of Kells. This is particularly true during peak tourist season (you don't say when you are traveling or what time your flight arrives). Remember, also, that if you leave the airport, you will have to go back through security, so you have to allow times for that as well as time to get back to the airport.
When I went there earlier this year, people who bought tickets that included the guided tour of the college (an additional euro) bypassed the ticket queue for the Book of Kells. However, I can't say whether this is general practice, and I guess wouldn't be the case if the queue was because there were too many people in the exhibition area.
Thanks so much for the replies to my question about my layover in Dublin, Ireland from Stacy, Nancy and Marco. You gave me valuable information based on your first-hand experience. Appreciate your taking time to help a fellow traveler. Take care. Ed Sullivan
