France and Italy

Starting from scratch.
1. Need to get 4 airline tickets from Denver to Marseille, France. Two tickets will be covered with air miles so I believe I need to go to Frankfort or London. Frankfort is cheaper so far.
2. Marseille is where the family of our exchange student lives and they have offered to take us around Europe for two week.
3. We would like to take a few days of those 2 weeks on our own to get to Campabosso Italy to see my husbands heritage etc... I understand we should see Rome then go to Campabossa. How do you suggest we get there without disturbing our French family. Time is an issue since we only have two weeks. Are there cheap flights from Marseille to Rome?

Direct flights from Marseille to Rome on either Air France or Alitalia are very expensive. The cheapest way to fly would be on Ryanair: Marseille to Paris Beauvais and Paris Beauvais to Rome Ciampino.
