Rome to Tuscany

Hi

I'm looking into doing a day trip from Rome to Tuscany. I found a bus line that will take me to Sienna, but I'm looking to go to Volterra and San Gimignano. Does anyone know of any bus tours that go to the cities or would it be easier to rent a car. I'm not sure how difficult it would be driving to these places. Or maybe it would be worth getting a driver??? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

thank you!!!

That's a very long day trip - 3 hours to Siena and another hour to San Gimignano or 2 hours to Volterra (those times are each way). With only 3 hours in each town, that's a 14-16 hour day trip. If your heart is set on the trip, renting a car for the day and driving from Rome might be the best option. There are no good public transportation options between San Gimignano and Volterra. Rent a GPS to keep from getting lost. For a shorter day trip, consider Orvieto (1 hour) or just going to Siena. Assisi (2 hours) is another worthwhile option.
