Does anyone know if it is necessary to purchase tickets in advance for a Eurostar Italia trip (daytime)to get a better fare? Trenitalia website seems to give a better fare if you purchase in advance, but I'm wondering if it's truly necessary. Thanks (in advance ;-))

It is definitely not necessary to purchase Trenitalia tickets in advance. But, that cuts you out of any online discounts you see because, as Kent points out, Trenitalia does not accept American credit cards. If you will be in Italy for some time, you can buy tickets way in advance. If over 7 days in advance, you might get some of the discounts.
