Literally thousands of hotels to choice from. Any good guidebook, TripAdvisor, etc. will give you recommendations. For you what is reasonable? desirable? Define it -- I have no idea. What area of Rome do you wish to stay in? We always stay in the Termini area for transportation convenience -- Sonya, Aberdeen, and Contrilla in that order.

Gil:

I have stayed at the Aberdeen Hotel twice. It is about a 5 minute walk from the main train station and you can get buses, the metro or walk to most sites.

The rooms were clean and the staff very nice. It is a hotel where the RS tours stay,

Gil, We've also stayed at the Sonya near Termini. Liked the hotel, continental breakfast and there is an elevator. In this Helpline site, the "to the Boot " section would probably get you more reponses to this question. Sherry

You might check out the Azalea Apartment in the Trastevere area of Rome (Just across the river from the city center). It has a lovely 2-bedroom apartment with private baths. Here's what one reviewer wrote:
"Beautifully decorated, with everything that you need in a "home away from home" we felt totally spoilt. Plenty of room and light, comfortable and practical furnishings, fittings and amenities. Two good size bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fantastic modern and fully equiped kitchen, washer/dryer; a wonderful terrace on which to sit and enjoy the first coffee of the day, CD player, Television, and the list just goes on. Highly recommended."

gil,

You might get a wider range of replies if you post this in the "To The Boot" section.
