3 Days to spare between CT and Paris - where to stop that has good connections

I'm US-bound this summer but my daughter and her dad are setting off for a month in Europe and they've both already chosen their destinations. The only open thing is a transit route from the CT to Paris. My ex-DH is spending some time in the CT area. He then has 3 completely open nights before he needs to be in Paris on July 20th.

We've both looked at a ton of different ideas but do any of you have any cool routes you've really liked? He does not want to fly.

He travels light with a backpack and doesn't need fancy. I looked at CT - Nice - Paris with 3 nights in Nice. I looked at an Alps town but the transit is long.

They're spending a week in Annecy together before they split up so I was not looking in that area as he was hoping for somewhere new.

All ideas appreciated.

In Italy, CT is Cinque Terre.
My first thought was to spend time in Nice too. There is excellent transportation ( train and bus) up and down the coast from Nice for day trips. Antibes, Cap Ferat, etc. We spent two weeks in Nice and never ran out of places to explore. Or continue on to the heart of Provence like Avignon.
Or explore the beautiful Piedmont region , Torino, Alba. Not sure about public transportation though as we had a car.
