Could someone explain these to me. When are they available, to and from where, and how do you get the discount?
Thanks
Correction: The Amica fare is only offered on FAST trains for which a seat reservation is required. The ticket is for a specific departure date and time. It is NOT offered on local and regional trains. If any of the allotted seats are still available, you can get an Amica fare up to midnight of the day before departure.
Adding a bit to Tim's explanation, Amica fares are llimited discounts based on day, train and class. As Tim explains, you have to purchase before midnight before the day of travel. At this point, they are usually gone. Two primary ways to purchase. The first is to buy when you first get to Italy. Hopefully, this purchase is several days before travel. You can buy from the automatic machines. We have posts on this site from travelers who are successful in getting the Amica fare. Second, you can buy online. Note, however, that it is a series of steps necessary to set up and buy from www.trenitalia.com. I have a post on the second page of The Boot "HOW TO BUY TRENITALIA TICKETS USING YOUR VISA CARD". This post explains everything.
