Passport Expiration

A friend was saying that there was some sort of time period before your passport expires that it won't be accepted? Anyone hear of such a thing? Seems strange that that would be so. That is was an expiration date is for.

For most countries in Europe you need three months validity. Most other countries around the world require 6 months. In addition the airlines will deny boarding if your passport doesn't comply expiration limit of the country you are flying into.
